UX/UI design- my first challenge

Every day we do the same routine, brush our teeth, getting dressed, having breakfast, and go out to the world to start our day. not all of us have our own cars so we use the public transportation to go from point A to point B.

Sometimes it’s easy to do that and sometimes it’s so frustrating when you can not find your route, where to buy a ticket, and your whole day is ruined. With this challenge, I will try making it easier to go from A to B.

First thing first, understanding the problem

  • where can I find the option in the app to purchase a ticket?
  • which kind of ticket should I buy?

“Your task is to create a feature for this app that solves the pain of having to purchase different public transport tickets by different channels.”

Let’s solve this!

Empathize

My strategy was to give my 5 users a task:

  1. Download the citymapper app.
  2. The task: you need to go to a meeting in Leonardo hotel Alexanderplatz Berlin from your home address which is Simon-Dach-Strasse 5, Berlin.
  3. You need to find the best route for you (in public transport).
  4. You need to buy a ticket.
  5. Do the same with BVG app

I measured times in each user experience app for each user.

Define

  • With citymapper app it took the users 1:30 minutes to find the best route for them.
  • Most users gave up after 4 minutes of searching where to buy a ticket and what the ticket price is.
  • With BVG app it took the users between 35–55 seconds to find the rout and the ticket price. The whole experience of finding the route and buying a ticket took around 2 minutes.

All my users said the same- The app is messy and there is nowhere to buy a ticket.

Ideate- I have a solution!

My first solution (marked in green)- on the upper right corner- a “know where to go- buy a ticket” button.

My second solution (marked in purple)- Adding a “buy a ticket” tab after searching the route destination.

My Solutions sketch

As I learned through this challenge, finding a solution is easy if you just make an effort to understand the problem and solve it.
